It has been tooooo long.

I can't believe that I have not posted on here in a month.  Lots going on lately to include changing jobs and trying to get things set up in my craft room.  I do have couple of pictures to share of the bookshelf that I painted.....it turned out quite well.  Also, my husband surprised me and let me get cabinets and a counter top for my craft room so I am very excited to get that put in.  I spent the better part of last weekend painting the cabinets - they are oak and were unfinished and they sure sucked up a lot of white paint.  I was going to be bold and go with a color but since I painted the shelf "flamingo pink" and I plan to paint two other pieces of furniture in there some color between a teal and a green, I thought it was best to go simple on the cabinets.  Plus, since I like changing things often, I am sure that I will use a lot of different colors in the room all the time.  I have been saving cans and jars and boxes ..... not sure what I will do with all of this but something will come along that I want to make.  Now I have the room to store things and work on pieces without the necessity to finish them right away because they are sitting out in the open.
So, about the shelf.  I bought this at a yard sale last summer as well as the table that is in this room that I plan to set up my sewing machine on ..... until I can get a new one which I desperately want.  The shelf was stained a very ugly color, reddish-brown, yuck.  I found a recipe for homemade chalk paint and it worked very well.

Homemade Chalk Paint
2 parts flat latex paint, any color
1 part Plaster of Paris aka POP
Enough warm water to stir the POP in and get the paint smooth.

It will appear a little thick as you go along but keep stirring it as you are painting.  I used a medium pink, Valspar Paint from Lowe's literally called "Flamingo Pink".  It lightened up a little when I mixed in the POP.  It goes on very smooth.  I painted one coat and then lightly sanded the piece before I added a second coat.  Then I sanded small areas well so that the wood shows through and I nicked it up a few places to age it some.  I finished by going over the entire shelf with a coat of clear Paste Wax.  It turned out great!

I can tell already that I need a better camera.  My pictures on here look horrible.  But anyway, I will show you the rest of room very soon.

Long weekend

So I have a long weekend, five days off --- lucky me.  I have a lot that I want to get done.  I am pretty much done with the den - hope to get Steph over to take some pictures this weekend.  Anita and I have been rearranging the living room, what a waste of space to have a living room and a den but my house was built in 1950 and they had big rooms like that back then.  No one ever sits in there but maybe once I add some TLC to the room, I can create a reading corner and actually use the room.  I am most anxious to get my kitchen done since I spend a lot of time in there but I have to wait for warmer weather.  I plan to take all of the cabinet doors off and outside they will go to be sanded and sanded and sanded some more.  They probably have 5 or 6 coats of oil paint on them plus I tried painting over them with latex paint when I moved here and the oil paint is bleeding through.  They not only look horrible but they are several different shades of white.  That will be a hue undertaking and I will need a lot of help.  I have 25 cabinet doors and 13 drawers.  I will definitely be hitting up my friends for some help with that in a couple of months.  I am using the blue-green Mason jars and birds in there, sounds odd together but it will look good when I am done.  I have lots of shelves to fill.  I am trying to find a farm table, I have been looking for several months but have not found what I want yet.  I have my favorite thrift store that I go to pretty much every weekend .... today they had once that would have been great but it was a funky color and had these ugly painted flowers on it so it would have entailed stripping and sanding to to make it work, plus it is more than I have put aside for a table.  Right now, my table and chairs is "retro" - I might have a picture of the kitchen as it is if you want to help me out with some ideas.

The chairs are torn some but I might still be able to sell the set once I find another table.  I have 4 chairs already that Anita found ..... her neighbor had them outside at the road with his trash and she asked him if she could have them.  They are nice Windsor chairs that I plan to paint whatever color I use.  See the yellow on the shelves ... I do not like it at all.  I took the curtains down and have been collecting Mason jars so that is what I want to use on that shelf.  I need help with colors for the cabinets and wall space.

My new addiction ........ Chandeliers

I am working fast to get my craft room ready because I have so many great ideas that I picked up from Pinterest.com to make some cool decor from old chandeliers.  I have three now and visit the thrift store every weekend and when the weather warms up and I can start going to yard sales, I am going to buy as many as I can.  Who knows?  Maybe I will come up with something that is unique, all my own idea and sell them to make some money so I can buy even more.  Check out some of these ones that I found that I really like.  I have three to get started on so I must finish the den today so I can get into that spare room and have somewhere to put all of these things and the other junk that I keep bringing home.  I will have my "Girl Cave", I will, I will.

These are easy ones, just some spray paint and a few dangles.  Some of these others that I found are more intricate.

And this one below is my favorite, not too difficult to make. I got the idea from another blogger .... she has some really cute ideas on her blog.  Reckless-Glamour.com
Can you tell I am excited?  I can't wait to make this one for my craft room and may make one for my daughter as one of these might look really cute in one of her rooms.  Oh, I love the internet, so many ideas but so little time ..... I plan to use this year to make time to do things like this.  I love creating things.  Happy Day.

Wow.....what a week.

Where did the time go?  I let almost a whole week go by without writing.  I am not so good at this and honestly I think I am doing this all wrong.  Nonetheless I was going to post more pictures of the den ... and though it is STILL not finished  : ( - it is almost done.

The fireplace ..... it is an old granite stone fireplace that was once used to burn wood I guess.  It is dingy and dirty looking and aside from using muratic acid I don't know how to clean it.  I have tried a brush and water but it still looks pretty bad to me .... but everyone else seems to like it.  Being married to a firefighter makes it a little difficult to do too much decorating over top because the gas logs get "too hot" and I understand but gee, I wish I could put something over the top there.  SO this is before .....

And here are a couple of after pictures.  I don't have the center done yet .... just a couple of sneak peeks.

The first one is not very clear.  But Anita and I just went on another scavenger hunt through my house looking for "stuff" to put on the shelf and when we didn't have enough, we went to our favorite thrift store.  I bought the little rocking horse which my daughter immediately called "creepy" but I thought it was adorable.  I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder as they say.  It really works, too .. .the music box works when you wind it up and it rocks.  Oh and the chandelier .... waiting on some pretty white candles.  And today I bought another one so now I have two more to use in my next decorating venture.  Hint, one of them will be white  and I am looking for crystals ..... very cute surprise for my dining room.

I bought new curtains and slipcovers for my couch and loveseat.  I like the curtains but I hated the slipcovers.  So for now, we just threw an old one from my living room sofa on the couch and put a throw over the loveseat.  It is a bit vintage-shabby chic-coastal all in one.  What do you think?

TGIF ..... finally

Thank goodness it's Friday ... whoever came up with that phrase was on the money about the feeling this day brings to the work week.  I like my job even though the drive sucks (1.5 hrs/day) but it is nice to get a break.  I have not forgot about adding more pictures of my den ... I just can't seem to find the time to write on weeknights.  It will get easier as I go along but I still get flustered because I cannot figure this whole blogging thing out yet.
Anyway, I hope to completely finish the room tomorrow because I need to paint .... it is therapeutic for me and keeps the joints moving.  Plus I just joined loseit.com which is an online weight loss program and I can work off some of my daily calories painting......up and down the ladder is a good exercise.  The program works like another popular online program in that you can eat whatever you want but you have to stay under your daily caloric intake.  When you join, you enter your current weight and your goal weight and you choose how fast you want to lose and it figures up how many calories you can have in a day.  You then add in what you eat and most every food you can think of is on there and you also add activities that you do .... I just joined yesterday but if I stick with the program, I will get to my goal weight by June.  It is not healthy to lose too much too fast.  Now if I can stay away from cupcakes and cookies I will be good .... or else I can eat two cupcakes a day and I would probably be done. I can have 1470 calories a day, that is not bad.

Now for a few more den pictures .... as you look at these my goal is to have the room look coastal because I do like the beach (though I like the mountains MUCH better) and the room was already decorated nautical but it was a little boring.  It needed some personality and I think that Anita and I have managed to add that nicely.
As you know, I love thrift stores and yard sales and anything that is shabby chic.  Anita brought me a present the first day we painted ...... the perfect addition the the room to give it :the look" I was going for.  Check out this chair.  I love the chipped paint, the look of the beach and that is looks weathered.  Funny thing is that when my husband saw it, he was like "That is nice, it will look good once you sand it and paint it" ..... so not happening.  LOL

I will post the rest of the pictures tomorrow.

Monday, Monday

It's the dreaded end to my weekend ... off to work tomorrow.  I am fortunate that I am only working four days a week now, thank goodness for my husband having good health insurance so I could go part-time at my job.  I still work 34-36 hours a week but working one less day a week makes all the difference in the world.  I spent my weekend doing things I actually enjoyed, some quality family time and time with my best girlfriend.  We are basically finished with redecorating my den, only a few final touches left to do and then off to the next room makeover.
To fill you in on the den .... it was added to my house way before we bought it, probably in the late 60's.  It is a large room, 33 x 17.  It has a really big stone fireplace that goes across one end of the room so it is pretty big.  The stone looks dingy and dirty and it does not have a mantle so it is somewhat blah and I am looking for ideas.  There is a wet bar with a sink and this is what it looked like before the change.

When we bought the house, the bar was a selling point that we liked but we used it maybe twice.  We bought the liquor to fill the shelves and most of it is 10 years old.  My husband, Bruce, drinks beer and I drink very rarely so it had become an eyesore to me and with all the stained wood and mirrors, it looked dated.  Not to mention that I was always embarrassed when certain people came to visit, like when one of my girls would have a friend come over and the parent dropped them off, I found myself worrying that they might think we were a bunch of alcoholics and might worry about their kid being over here.  Anyway, I hated the color of the wood, it was that almost orange, very, very dated and needed some help.  When we first moved here all of the walls are paneling that was the same color and I painted it one weekend when Bruce was out of town.  It looked a ton better but I still did not like it,  In fact< i really wanted it taken down but it would have been a major deal to take out.  I have now completely changed the look and I love it. We started by taking all the mirror out ..... my partner in crime, Anita, my best girlfriend, helped me and inspired me through this whole project.

We then had to prime all of the wood, beams, LOTS of trim and the bar.  It took a lot of work and was rough on the two of us looking up because we both have trouble with neck and shoulder pain.  Anita came prepared with pain patches, Salonpas, they are awesome - cheap and better than prescription pain patches I have used.  We used Valspar primer from Lowes - it actually was good to work with, it went on smooth and covered better than I imagined with all the stain and shellac that was on the wood.
We both like painting, not so much ceilings and crown molding but it had to be done.  The worst part of the whole project was caulking all of the gaps, nail holes, cracks in the wood - we used 10 tubes of caulk in two days.  What a difference it made though in the cold air around the windows and the noise that has lessened some from the train that goes by all day.  Anyway, here is the finished bar with the exception of the bar top which I am still trying to figure out what to do there ... the green swirled paint has got to go.  But check this out.

It is still a bar, so to speak, but I put most of the alcohol in the cabinets underneath and used all sorts of items that I had all over other places in the house and Anita brought her own "treasures" over to add.  We have the same taste in decorating.  Keeping in mind my love of flamingos, there are two of them on there - the wooden one on the bottom left, my daughter bought me awhile back and Anita gave me the cute little glass one on the top shelf in front of the star. The stained glass dragonfly on the second shelf is one of my favorite items, Anita made that, she used to have her own stained glass business and she has some beautiful pieces. I added some driftwood that I picked up at the beach this year and old books that I had stored away and just some random things to fill it up and make it look less like a bar.  Bruce put up a track light that shines on there and adds some ambiance ... I am so happy with how it turned out.

Any suggestions for the bar top?  I was thinking of maybe making it square instead of the oval shape and either putting tile or just wood.

Tomorrow night, I will post some pictures of the rest of the room.  It all looks amazing and all I need to do now is find curtains, slipcovers and find a good deal on carpet.

TGI.....Thursday

It is almost the weekend ... thank goodness.  This has been a hectic week at work and I have so much that I want to do this weekend.  I started redecorating my den two weekends ago and hope to finish it this weekend and help my daughter girl finish painting her office space.  I really, really enjoy painting, except ceilings and crown molding which is what I have to do this weekend.  I am in the process of redecorating my whole house and excited because I have so many great ideas.  Having A.D.D. doesn't help me with projects because I tend to start one and am planning the next one before I am done.  Like now, I have the den to finish painting and trying to decide what window treatments I should use and once I get that done, I am going to start on my craft/sewing room.  When my girls were little and I was able to stay home with them, I had time to do crafts and even did some sewing.  I really want to pick sewing back up and get better at it and I have this notion to start a quilt so I am anxious to get started on my next room already.  I sold my treadmill last weekend and have a nice little chunk of money that I should probably spend on carpet or a new couch but I am tight when it comes to spending money.  I mean, I buy nice things when I need to but I tend to be pretty frugal about my money because it doesn't come easy.  There are so many other things that I want and I am the type of person that really likes to think things through and shop around for the best deal ..... and I don't have time for that right now. LOL  Carpet will have to wait for now.

I will learn to post some pictures on here this weekend so I can show you my progress.  Wait until you see my den makeover, pretty drastic and it looks great.  I actually have spent more time in there this week than I have in the past five years.  That's my whole point, if I have to stay in this house since the market was not kind to us when we tried to sell, I have to make myself LIKE the house...and I am and I will.

Cannot wait for 5pm tomorrow ... three days off!  Yes!

And so we begin .... again

This is my fourth and last blog.  I have no good excuse except to say that I have no idea how to manage one but I will learn, this I assure you.  I have not a clue how to categorize or add links yet, much less create my own blog title bar.  I guess you could say that I am a little "blog-illiterate".   So today I will just start this new blog with the idea to make it fun.  Instead of trying to get into all kinds of details right up front, like my current home renovations and how-to's, I will try something different.  For awhile I will just blog about random things like things I heard about during the day or things that annoy me or things that worry me or people that I love.

The title of my blog is probably weird to you but I have always had a fondness for flamingos.  I think they are beautiful - I love their colors. Ever since I was a kid, I have always stood on one leg while washing dishes, cooking, putting on makeup and have even been know to stand on one foot while rolling a perm.  People have called me a stork or a crane but I prefer to think that flamingos are much prettier and they are the only birds I have ever seen in person that stand that way.  My eyes are drawn to them when I see pictures of them and I think that it is cool to have them in your garden.  I had some but their color faded, guess I need new ones this year. (Hint to someone around Mother's Day. )  Anyway, thus the name and I plan to do some research and post facts about them from time to time, just for the heck of it plus I like to learn new things.  As someone once told me "you can never have too much knowledge".

So for now, something fun and different.  I am sure that it is not original but it might just be something new for them to have fun with.  I plan to do a “Word of the Week”.   I know, it sounds silly but I hope to get some fun comments and laughs.  I will pick a word that is out of the ordinary, a word that intrigues me or makes me giggle and you can make a sentence or just make a comment ..... write anything you want, just make me smile.
My first word is:   DISCOMBOBULATEI love that word!
